Pride of Life

Don’t love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in them. Everything that is in the world—the craving for whatever the body feels, the craving for whatever the eyes see and the arrogant pride in one’s possessions—is not of the Father but is of the world.  And the world and its cravings are passing away, but the person who does the will of God remains forever.

1 John 2:15-17

These worldly things with greed like kings
the flesh and eyes do crave.
In toil and strife, we cling to life
as if it’s ours to save.

We often ask, “is this a task
too menial for me?”
But set aside that ugly pride
serve sacrificially.

All this wanting, ever daunting
just count it all as loss.
Humble your heart, be set apart
and look upon the cross.

Lust of the flesh – the soul’s enmeshed
All sin just leads to death.
But turn back now, He’ll show you how
God is your life and breath.

Don’t trade your soul, show self-control
now is your faith in vain?
Christ has been raised, on Him you’ve gazed
in Jesus all is gain.

Lust of the eyes – word to the wise
it all will fade away.
So do God’s will, He loves you still
He longs for you today.

By His mercy, but unworthy
not fit – but useable.
A servants heart, state of the art
to God, it’s beautiful.

  1. Following is the background on this poem:

The Lord showed me something at a recent women’s bible study at church. The bible study leader, Anna, gave a beautiful illustration from John 13:15 on what it means to be God’s servant. She went around the room and washed each woman’s feet and prayed over us. It was a very humble thing to do! During this study, God spoke to me about my pride. I am pretty sure He wants me to “get over myself”. 🙂

He reminded me that pride is ugly but a servant’s heart is beautiful to the Lord. There is no task too small if it is in service to the Lord. I am to serve sacrificially as Christ did for me and as Anna so beautifully displayed to our women’s group. Apart from the Lord, I am not fit, I am unworthy apart from His grace, to serve in any task for the Lord; rather it is by His will and through the power of the Holy Spirit that I am able to serve Him at all.

The Lord gave me the following scripture during the bible study and from there I wrote this poem. I was wanting to try a new (to me) poetic form called the Triquatrain, so that is why the poem turned out the way it did. The poem itself is not all that great, but what God showed me was significant to me.

John 13:2-17 So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

James 4:10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

Philippians 3:8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ.

John 1:27 It is He who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose.”

1 John 2:15-17 Don’t love the world or the things in the world.

Ephesians 2:1-3 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.

If you made it to the end and have read all of this, I hope that somehow God has touched you with these words as well!

    Blessings,
    Scotti

  2. Scotti,
What a beautiful poem. I am still in awe of what the Lord did that night. He was so present and had something for each and every woman in that room. Thank you for sharing your words and your heart. ~Anna
