I once questioned each step along the way
While longing to uncover paths of truth;
Thus pondering the meaning of my life,
And venturing through ev’ry open door.
For stolen water’s sweet with secret bread,
As if fondling the darkness for true light.
Night as heavy as a feather is light,
So desolate I felt destruction’s way.
When nimbly kneading at Nietzche’s bread,
Believing I had tasted of the truth,
With hardened heart, I safely locked the door,
Yet woke to find no purpose for my life.
What would it take for me to come to life
And experience truth lived in the light?
Ego loves to place blame outside the door,
Yet my conscience ached for a better way.
Absolute about a relative truth,
Rejecting the One who buttered my bread.
Now, nothing satisfies like heaven’s bread;
Food which sustains us to eternal life.
Praise God I did awaken to His truth,
And step into the wisest realm of light.
The only way is The Good Shepherd’s way,
All answers found through Resurrection’s door.
While death and suffering knock at our door,
Our Creator beckons us to break bread.
Calling us to a new and living way,
Offering us love and the tree of life.
With peace and love shall ever shine His truth.
In Christ, “know thy self” is a simple truth.
We humbly hear the voice of heaven’s door
And choose to follow Him as heirs of light.
Partaking of His Word, our daily bread;
Enduring to obtain the crown of life,
We gladly lean on Him to guide the way.
I am the Way, Jesus said, and the Truth
I am the Life, the only righteous Door.
Your daily Bread, the Vine, the one true Light.
The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God. As the Scriptures say, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and discard the intelligence of the intelligent.” So where does this leave the philosophers, the scholars, and the world’s brilliant debaters? God has made the wisdom of this world look foolish. Since God in his wisdom saw to it that the world would never know him through human wisdom, he has used our foolish preaching to save those who believe. 1 Corinthians 1:18-21 (AMP)
Poetry Type: Sestina
Note: Line #30 of this poem is a paraphrase from Milton’s poem On Time.

My God! This poem says it all…
Hi Chimera, thanks so much for stopping by and commenting. I look forward to exploring your site. Scotti
Hi Scotti,
I looked at Shadow Poetry’s explanation of how to write a sestina, but I’m not sure I get it. I probably need to read it over a few times. Anyway, I can relate to what you are saying about looking for the meaning of life through philosophies and things that do not satisfy. The only One who satisfies is Jesus, the Bread of Life. Indeed it is a privilege to know Him, and I have never felt empty or unfulfilled since He came into my life. Thanks for sharing.
Blessings,
Carol
Hi Carol, thanks for stopping by today. This was my first try at a sestina and this poem most likely does not give the form justice. The last word of each sentence is repeated throughout each stanza, just in a different order. Wikipedia has a more detailed description of the sestina – here is a link–> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sestina
It is so amazing when the Lord opens our spiritual eyes to see His Truth. His wisdom is like no others and as you say, He is the only One who fully satisfies all of our needs.
May the peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you always. Scotti
Wonderful, wonderful truths expressed in this poem. It encompasses the who of Christ and the why of His salvation. Thank you for using your gift to bless us.
Hi Maxine, my heart really goes out to those that rely solely on their own wisdom and knowledge without acknowledging the source of all wisdom. I pray for the work of the Holy Spirit to open the eyes of the blind to see His miraculous truth. I fear for those that have rejected God for so long that their hearts have been hardened. However, we know that nothing is impossible with God and that it His desire that all would come to repentance. I believe that at just the slightest glimpse of a reprententant heart our Lord comes running to pour out His forgiveness and grace. God Bless you today and always. Scotti
Beautiful testimony of your journey to and then in Christ! May we all learn to partake of the Tree of Life as our Daily Bread. I love all the Names of Jesus you used throughout your poem. Indeed, He is the only Way!
What rich rich words! You are so very gifted, my friend.
Blessings

this is so true… our life will be meaningless without Jesus in our heart…For money, fame and status in life may loss in any moment but Jesus Christ will never failed on loving us unconditionally…With our journey to our life it will be more satisfying and rewarding if we always have faith in God… In that way we find true joy and happiness in life…
I can relate to your post, for once in my life i felt lost… but thats to God, He restore and guided to the shadow of right pathway.
God bless…
This is what we need more of in the Church. We need to lead in the arts- to show genuine talent and not just Christian t-shirts that are so cheesy that we are ashamed to buy them.
God bless you and your expression of your faith! I pray that God opens many hearts up to His truth by you revealing yours.

Scotti,
Bravo! Bravo! Not only have you selected a difficult style (sestina) but you have attacked a difficult topic – not without great style however. You have turned a tedious philosophic discourse into a beautiful poem, without detracting from meaning. I particularly enjoy:
“Kneading at Nietzsche’s bread”
and
“In Christ, ‘know thy self’ is a simple truth”
Interesting how pre-Christian Socratic wisdom helps bring us to an understanding of God, but post-Christian Nietzschean philosophy pits our logic against our faith. These two lines alone have given me much to think about – not that the rest of your poem didn’t. Thank you for your post and God Bless.
Scotti, I’m not sure if I did it justice, but I love this poem and used it in my most recent video for Easter! Thanks!
Hi Matt! I am blown away by your artistic talent and humbled that you would choose this poem for your video. Thank you so much. I will add the video link to this page. God Bless, Scotti http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJwIV3JR3d4
Thanks everyone for your gracious comments. I have updated this page to include an embedded video created by my friend, Matt. Check it out!
