Sentinel

I the Lord have called you to demonstrate my righteousness. I will guard and support you, for I have given you to my people as the personal confirmation of my covenant with them. You shall also be a light to guide the nations unto me. – Isaiah 42:6

While drifting in utter starkness,
entrapped by the dense fog that blinds,
His sentinel pierced the darkness;
the Bright and Morning Star still shines.

He frees me from death’s cold shadow,
to a place the Spirit refines,
His mercy He longs to bestow;
the Bright and Morning Star still shines.

A beacon to the lost at sea,
His true light precisely defines,
the clearest path to liberty;
the Bright and Morning Star still shines!

His Word is a lamp to my feet,
penetrating the murky lines,
and dissolving all vain conceit;
the Bright and Morning Star still shines.

Christ is the light to all nations,
towering above our confines,
built on eternal foundations;
the Bright and Morning Star still shines!

  1. Scotti, thanks for your patience. I’ve had much to work through.

    Yours is a well-crafted poem. The kyrielle form is handled confidently, and the repeated line gives the poem a steady, hymn-like rhythm that suits the subject. The form isn’t often seen in modern English poetry, so I appreciated its use. The refrain anchors each stanza and reinforces the sense of constancy you’re aiming for.

    The imagery of light as guidance comes through clearly, and the structure carries that idea consistently from stanza to stanza. A touch of variation within the stanzas could add contrast and give each section a slightly different emphasis.

    Thanks for such a considered and disciplined response to the prompt.

    Dennis
